HOW TO UNLOCK YOUR DEVICE IF YOU GOT HIT TOO!
Ok, There are a lot of comments and everyone that comes here with a similiar problem will not have time to get through them - so I'm adding a small section of how to deal with it if you got hit too.
First of all - if you didn't have 2FA, keep in mind that the person that accessed your account had also access to the keychain with all your other passwords and all the photos and docs in the iCloud drive.
Secondly - as far as I understood from the comments, if he set up a passcode on your phone (because you never had one), then you'll have to wipe your device anyways.
So, the resolution - I assume your account was automatically on lockdown by apple, if not just skip the steps with password reset:
1 Open up https://www.icloud.com/#find
2 Log in
3 (Most likely) You'll be prompted to reset your password, you can do that here: https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid
4 Enter your email, the code from the image, then you'll be asked to answer a few questions and enter your backup phone number 5 Enter new password after going through the above step
6 Log in again to https://www.icloud.com/#find
7 Find your device on the list
8 Turn off the Lost mode
Then CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD AND NEVER REUSE PASSWORDS, Don't be a dumb ass like I was.
Original post
tl;dr someone hacked into my two-factor protected account, put into lost mode, demanded 75$ or he'll wipe iCloud
Yesterday when I was heading out to a party I noticed a strange message on my iPhone asking to send an email - and I suddenly realized that my phone was put into lost mode.
http://imgur.com/a/IRSWO
I quickly jumped onto my inbox and found out that two devices were put into that state out of nowhere, and shortly after that Apple blocked my account (phew). To translate - Red arrows are the "Device was put into lost mode / Device has been found", Blue are "Your account has been accessed from a web browser", whilst the green one is "Your apple ID password has been reset".
http://imgur.com/a/SFEcv
Yes, after I changed my password he was able to AGAIN change the lost mode status!
I mailed that account (obviously from a disposable email) to check what's going on, and I got an automatic response:
http://imgur.com/a/kXnqp
I don't hold anything in the iCloud thankfully (at least nothing important or shameful), so this doesn't really bothered me. But still, could anyone explain how the heck he was able to get around two factor auth?
Also, it seems no one paid yet, since the bitcoin wallet is empty https://bitref.com/19FHZjdTSB6uts9DsLB4QrbarEvVTvB6G7
Moreover, I posted this on a polish social reddit-like page, and it turned out someone had similiar situation 3 hours later. Maybe someone else on this subreddit was also affected?

[dev] Wallet Security (and update for w/e 28th Sept)

This week we've continued with merging in changes for the 1.8.1 client, which now is down to a handful of more complex patches to test and apply. For those asking, I've started looking at the Toshi node that Coinbase released last weekend and feasibility of adding Dogecoin support. I have a version which syncs to around block 6k on test and live Dogecoin networks, however without AuxPoW support it grinds to a halt once the later blocks are relayed to it (and blocks are not delivered in-order, for reasons I'm not entirely sure about to be honest).
With help from kindoge and AndyMeows I've patched Bitcoin-ruby to support Dogecoin, which is pre-requisite for supporting the network in Toshi. That patch has been submitted to Bitcoin-ruby's developers for them to review and hopefully merge. Once that's done I can then start pushing changes into Toshi so the work in progress is readily visible. Also, if you're wanting a summary of the parameters used in Dogecoin, Bitcoin-ruby will be a really good source of those values.
Earlier this week there was a post from a user who lost their personal stash of coins from an unencrypted wallet, and I wanted to take this opportunity to talk not just about security best practices, but also why these are best practices. It's easy to tell you to back up often, encrypt your wallet, not backup into the cloud (or at least, not Dropbox), but we forget it's why we say these things. Without the rationale being clear, we're essentially asking you to just believe us.
Firstly, backups. We tell you to back up because of two types of risk:
The second is important to understand, because we want you to back up somewhere independent to your own PC. I use a hardware encrypted thumbdrive stored at another location. For funds that aren't needed frequently, or large sums, it's a good idea to move them to a a paper wallet, or metal wallet such as Cryptocards, stored securely at another location (such as in a bank vault). Papemetal wallets should be generated offline (as in, on a system that's never connected to the Internet), eliminating risk of the keys being stolen remotely. Having multiple copies of such physical wallets is also a good idea, especially if using paper which can be easily destroyed by flooding or fire.
The next part to understand is how often; if you backed up once, why do you have to back up again? It's important to realise that the wallet file doesn't actually contain your funds, it contains the keys which unlock your funds. When you make a payment, in most cases a new key is taken from a pool within the wallet and any change from the payment is sent to that new key, while a new key is added to the pool. This process is an important part of how anonymisation works in Dogecoin, by making it harder to guess which part of a payment is going to another, and which is being retained by the sender.
Each backup contains that pool as it was when the backup was created. If all keys within the pool are used, and new keys used, they won't be part of the backup. Fortunately that pool is (by default) 100 keys, so it takes a while to exhaust, but it's still good practice to make new backups on a regular basis.
The other part of keeping your funds safe is encryption; if you're making copies of your wallet and leaving it elsewhere, what happens if someone else gets to it? We saw a number of cases early on in Dogecoin's life where people back up unencrypted wallets to Dropbox and the balances were promptly stolen. Encrypting the wallet protects against someone with the file being able to use it to steal your funds; how well it does this depends on how strong your password is, so pick a good password. Also, obviously don't tell anyone the password!
Lastly, as I mentioned we've seen issues with files being stolen from cloud storage such as Dropbox. As a general rule I'd advise against backing up to such services. The recent issue of celebrity's personal pictures being stolen from iCloud should reinforce that storing sensitive material online isn't a good idea, which is why I'd recommend encrypted thumb drives and physical wallets.
For those with very large amounts (especially funds held on behalf of others), we have a security researcher working on a best practices guide, which I'm told is still coming. More on that as I know.
Looking to the week ahead, next steps are finishing patches for the 1.8.1 client, and continued testing of 1.8.1. Live network tests have started for 1.8.1, and the Bitcoin Core 0.9.3 client it is based on has been released (reflecting a high degree of confidence in the code from the Bitcoin team), so hopefully we'll have a beta of that in the next week or two. I'm going to try taking a look at AuxPoW support for Toshi this afternoon, but that's likely to stretch over to next weekend as the changes are more involved.
Have a great week everyone!

Malicious attack on iDevices?

Recently a group of my friends got their MacBook hacked, using seemingly similar MO.
They all woke up one morning only to be greeted with a locked MacBook. Apparently put into lost mode.
However, there are no option to unlock the lost mode. Even on iCloud Web.
On the login screen, it says the computer is disabled and contact [redacted]@gmx.com
When contacted it responded with a request of ransom in Bitcoins
Now why I think this is a serious security breach, which it might potentially affect everyone—
  1. Most of their device are 2FA enabled, how did their Apple ID got hacked? Could there be a possible backdoor?
  2. Most of the victim download only Apps from Apps Store or trusted sources (i.e 1Password), what could possibly be the source of the attack?
  3. Another unfounded statements like the preceding statements, it seems perpetrator does not need to reset password to put Mac into lock mode. Could they have access iCloud data as well?
Just a thought, great if anyone can share their input.

Apple Store screen replacement mishap. I soon found out their mishap catapulted into serious $ loss, just hell. I hate trying. It's 3 hrs of time complaining to a different apple rep. Problems aren't solved. Please explain what my rights are? I'll vent all day in detail.

I am a stereotypical hipster-woodworker and Mac User. iPhone 6 ihas lived with a scotch tape screen cover its life. It does what I need and I love it in my shop. I spilled water on my MacBook Pro (RIP) two weeks ago. iPhone now is my only way to do things so the screen gets more cracks as it also gets less useful. I dreaded going to the store. But I set up my appt to investigate the laptop and repair my screen. I knew my book was toast. He confirmed. We talked local companies for recovery of data. Next the phone. He takes hold after I unlock it. He demonstrates routine: Checks for current iOS updates. Initiates iCloud backup, etc. Also I attempted a night before backup too. He says wait two hours and he will have a screen
I'm seated when I return. My phone is irreparable bc water damage. I'm not prepared to consider my dilemma on the spot. He offers the option of a replacement for 320 Im tired of my broken screen and disappointed when my new screen was impossible. I say yes
Well. I lost a month of recent data, photos, app info etc. The newest backup was so incomplete. 17mb compared to 12gb like my previous phone lived. Now, hours of tech help and we confirm it's fucked. I don't have any messages. Blah blah.
Remember though I also brought my computer along with me. And they confirmed that it was dead. I expected that anyway and was set to just get the data recovered. When I'm told my phone is not repairable I am a little cluttered and upset but I understand why. He turns to me with a new shiny one and says you can have this one for 320. I needed it. THey set up the carrier information. I asked for my old phone after I signed my receipt. I can't have it. Ok I see that's your way to sell me a 320 refurbished replacement. But that's really just a description of their marketing and sales strategy
The Problem accrued because now I have no way to use the verified devices (laptop and old iPhone) IP addresses to allow my new phone to gain access for several 2 FA controlled accounts. My back up had all of my mutli word recovery codes for bitcoin wallets and other accounts. My bitcoin purchases are in the thousands. Bought through Coinbase and stored in electrum. But since this new backup was horribly inconsistent and incomplete, that information is gone. There is plenty more but you get the idea. iCloud also lost business documents and invoices.
Hindsight is not helpful now of course external hd too. But I really felt duped, not maliciously, the apple employees should have allowed my backup on my phone which he initiated to complete and verify the size. I didn't know a fucked backup was the icloud reset point because my phone is off and I can't have it back now. If I never had mentioned my computer I would be upset with myself. But I was not there to move forward with the two devices. I left worse then I arrived.
I need a new computer now. I want my refund for the refurbished phone,'I'd buy a new iPhone too.
I'm not a free loader or one to complain but I really feel like it's more than a case of customer happiness. I'm not sure where to take it. I spoke with someone at the store after I frcompleted a survey. He offered only apology and the number for isupport. My case is with hey agent in the corporate customer relation are currently. I'm really gotten are confirmations that it's gone. And apology.

Part 2. What is Blockchain doing Today?

Hopefully, after reading Part 1. What is a Blockchain? you have a decent idea about how a user interacts with a Blockchain, and how a Blockchain is created and grows. With this foundation in place we will move on to talk about the applications of Blockchain technology taking place around the world today.
A short disclaimer: The following Blockchains are discussed purely at my discretion. I did my best to remain unbiased, but I do own most of the coins that are brought up here. I hold the coins because I believe in them, this belief is not just that they will increase in value, but also that they will accomplish the goals they've set for themselves. I could be wrong.

Part 2. What is Blockchain doing Today? is Outlined below:

1. Digital Currency & CryptoCurrency
2. Ethereum Smart Contracts
    2a. Programmable Element
    2b. Example of Smart Contract
3. Data Storage
    3a. Decentralization
    3b. Worst Case Scenarios

The first section to cover is Digital Currency, lets dive in!

1. Digital Currency. The definition of Digital Currency is an evolving one. As we find new ways to use Digital Currency the definition naturally becomes broader. One of the more simple definitions I've found is from Wikipedia:
A Digital Currency exhibits properties similar to physical currencies, but allows for instantaneous transactions and borderless transfer-of-ownership. Examples include Virtual Currencies and CryptoCurrencies.
It is important to note that Digital Currencies are the umbrella under which Cryptocurrencies & Virtual Currencies are found. A CryptoCurrency is merely a Digital Currency that meets some additional criteria. The two most important additional criteria for a CryptoCurrency are:
*see Validate in Part 1. What is a Blockchain?
By these definitions both Bitcoin and Ethereum (along with many other Altcoins) are Digital Currencies as well as CryptoCurrencies. If you're having trouble telling the difference, just remember that Digital Currency is the broadest definition when talking about this space!

2. Ethereum Smart Contracts. Bitcoin is the best "Proof of Concept" when it comes to CryptoCurrencies. Bitcoin is the oldest (released in 2009) and as of today is still the largest CryptoCurrency in terms of Market Capitalization. Ethereum is newer than Bitcoin, it held an Initial Coin Offering in July 2014 and was in development for another year until going live in July 2015.
2a. Programmable Element. What Ethereum offers (and some other CryptoCurrencies like Antshares/NEO and Lisk) are smart contracts. Ethereum takes the process of securely writing transactions into an untamperable ledger (like in the Bitcoin Blockchain) and adds a Programmable Element. The Programmable Element allows for transactions to be Requested by a piece of code, (this code has been committed to the Ethereum Blockchain in a previous block) in the same way a transaction on the Bitcoin Blockchain is committed. The difference here is that computer code, not a personal computer, Requests and then Broadcasts the transaction.
This opens up an entire new world of possibilities, some of which will be discussed in Part 3. What is Blockchain doing Tomorrow? under the ERC-20 Token section. For now, I just want you to know that Ethereum Smart Contracts allow for programming the CryptoCurrency Ethereum.
2b. Example: An example of this would be, "Matt borrows 10 Ethereum from Phil to start a Gunsmithing business. Phil sends Matt the 10 Ethereum from a Smart Contract that has predefined the repayment of the 10 Ethereum (interest rate, term, etc). Phil requires Matt to conduct business through an Ethereum address linked to the original Smart Contract. At the end of each month, the original Smart Contract automatically withdraws the correct amount of Ethereum from Matt's business address directly into Phil's address. This continues until the loan is paid back, at which point Phil's original Smart Contract is invalid and ceases withdrawals.
What the above example shows is that Matt doesn't have to do anything except run his business in a way that meets the Smart Contract's terms. There is no 3rd party required for Matt to get a business loan, or for Matt to repay that loan. Matt is accountable for this loan in the same way he would be for a traditional business loan (Liens against Assets, Lawsuit to recover, etc). This entire process is automated and only involves Matt and Phil unless one of them breaks the Loan Terms. The really exciting part is that the above example is only a very basic demonstration of what these Smart Contracts are capable of!

3. Data Storage. The idea of storing Data somewhere other than on your own device's physical Harddrive is not a new concept. "Store it in the Cloud" they say, and Dropbox, Google Drive, etc all have a way to do this. In fact, these big company's solutions work very well and for a reasonable price. The reason I want to talk about Data Storage as it relates to Blockchain and CryptoCurrencies is because these Cloud solutions from Google and Dropbox are still centralized and are alterable, unlike information that is on a Blockchain.
3a. Decentralization. You've probably heard this term a lot if you've spent any time in the "Crypto-sphere". The number of folks touting the benefits of Decentralization are many, and for good reason. Decentralization puts the power back into the hands of the people, rather than having a Centralized decision maker(s) who we hope will act in our best interest.
In the case of Data Storage, Decentralization means that your Data is not stored in a server farm somewhere in California, as is the case with iCloud. Rather, the data is committed into a Blockchain that people the world over have access to, including you, at any time, anywhere (with internet) and only you possess the private key needed to view the data.
It would be difficult, but if I wanted to physically take the Harddrive holding all of my iCloud contacts I could go to the Apple server farm, find the correct Harddrive, remove it, and I (along with whoever elses stuff is on there) would no longer have access to any of the data stored on it through iCloud. If I destroyed this Harddrive, the data on it would be lost forever.
Now imagine that all of my contacts are on the Steemit Blockchain. I could easily find a Harddrive that holds my contacts, any Harddrive that contains the Steemit Blockchain will have them. But if I destroy that Harddrive nothing happens. Tomorrow I go buy a new one and re-download the Steemit Blockchain, all of the data is still there, the same as I left it, so long as I have my private key which is used to unlock the data.
I realize that the scenario involving the Blockchain functions very similarly to how we view Cloud Storage currently. Your phone goes in the toilet, and you re-download all of your contacts from iCloud. The act of finding your specific Harddrive on a server farm is difficult, and Apple goes to great lengths to prevent any loss of your data. However, in some worst case scenarios Cloud Storage falls short, which leads me to my next point...
3b. Worst Case Scenarios. I'm going to get a little conspiratorial here, but stay with me!
The year is 2023, Trump is 3 years into his second term and the entire world is at war. The free flow of information we enjoy today has been severely limited as governments restrict anything that could threaten them, from facts on Global Warming to Gay Pride parade locations, most information regarding important issues is filtered or deleted.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, more and more information is destroyed in the effort by world leaders to hold onto power. Finally everyone nukes each other and humanity as we know it (along with all the knowledge we've accumulated) ceases to exist.
Pretty out there, I know. But if this scenario does happen, all of the knowledge on Blockchains will probably survive. All it would take is a single Harddrive somewhere the nukes didn't hit to recover all of that Blockchains data. No longer is a Library of Alexandria type situation a concern, rather, the concern is the amount of time it takes a Harddrive to decay until its unusable.
Yeah yeah, still out there. But how about the first part of that scenario where the information is being restricted? In all parts of the world dictators use the flow of information to keep their people in line (N. Korea, Russia, etc). They censor any positive news that makes them look incompetent and exaggerate any negative news to keep people scared.
What if there was a trusted global news source that committed their news onto a blockchain? Anyone in a country where unaltered information is hard to come by would be able to access this blockchain, as accessing the blockchain is much different (harder to stop) than accessing a webpage. They could view articles on people who escaped the country they live in, hear their stories, and hopefully share this news with others. At the very least it would force the people in charge to act a little more honestly and to have a little less control. At best it could mean the overthrow of the entire rotten regime. This is obviously wishful thinking on my part, but purely from the standpoint that no one has done it yet, we have the technology today to make this happen!

Again, thank you for reading this! Please comment below with any questions or critiques, I welcome both. Stay tuned for Parts 3-4, Part 1 is already available.

[dev] Wallet Security
